The city of flowers and nightingales
Welcome to Shiraz the capital of Fars province, and the heart of Iran, which gave its name to the Persian language: Farsi. The city of poets and philosophers, warriors and kings, Orchards and orangeries, roses and nightingales, Adonis`s and fragrant blossoms, the city of historic monuments where great empires of Achaemenes have come to power in Southern Iran.
It`s Located in the South of Iran and the northwest of Fars province, built at the foot of Zagros mountain, the city of Shiraz very likely dates back to more than 4000 years ago. The name of which has been found on cuneiform-inscription tablets of around 2000BC. Under the Achaemenes reign, the city was a main stop on the way from Susa, an ancient city of Elamite era, to Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, 550-330BC.
Subsequent to becoming the provincial capital in 693AD, Shiraz grew in importance and during the Buyid dynasty, following buildings, mosques, places, a library and the extended city wall, the city prospered.
In the 13th century, thanks to the support of ruling emperors, Shiraz turn into a leaning center for arts and letters and home to knowledge, mysticism, and philosophy , that is why the city is also referred to as "the Athens of Iran" known as the city of flowers and orchards , Shiraz boasts its heavenly gardens having inspired many internationally-known poets and writers, like Hafez and Sa`adi, under the rule of Karim Khan Zand, in the 18th century, the city became the Capital once more which was protected with a moat.The Royal district with a fortress together, a mosque and one of the finest covered bazaars in Iran are among the architectural treasure of this dynasty.
