Iran`s center of spirituality
Meaning the place of martyrdom where the 8th Shiite Imam is buried in a domed shrine. Mashhad is the main destination for both Iranian and foreign pilgrims. As one of the most important cities during Timurids dynasty in the 15th century, Mashhad was the focus of attention and Goharshad, The King`s wife, ordered the construction of an outstanding mosque beside the shrine known as Goharshad mosque named after her. During the Safavid era Mashhad gained even more religious recognition and turned into the most important city of the great Khorasan as several religious schools and other structure where built next to the shrine. Under Nadir Shah the Monarch of Iran in the 18th century, the city became his capital until the end of Afsharid Dynasty.
