Chahar Shanbe Soori

ChaharShanbe Soori is an Iranian holiday that is held on the last Wednesday of the year (Tuesday night), which in the word ChaharShanbe (Wednesday) is one of the days of the week and Soori means red. In this celebration, everyone starts gathering firewood in the yard, roof or alley at noon on Tuesday and lights the fire near sunset, and everyone gathers together and jumps over the fire. Usually they make 3, 5 or 7 (must be a odd number) pile of fire and all the people of the house jump over it and say this sentence: Sorkhi-e To Az Man, Zardi-e Man Az To, which means: ‌Your redness is for me, My yellowness is from you. It is believed that in this way, they burn the unhappiness, illness and bad things and take the redness and joy from the fire to start the new year with joy.

The ancients believed that the ashes of this fire were bad because people had given their disease, sorrow and jaundice to the fire by jumping over it. After the fire itself is extinguished, a woman collects the ashes and throws them out of the house, throwing them away or throwing them into running water. Then she knocks on the door and says that she comes from a wedding and brought happiness and health to the family.

These ceremonies still held in some cities:

1- Breaking the jar: They throw coal, salt and coins into an old jar and all the people turn it around the head and the last person throws the jar from the roof to the alley so that all the problems go into the jar and go to the alley.

2- Nuts: Salty and sweet nuts are made and eaten for good fortune and happiness.

3- Eavesdropping: ‌ People stand in the back of the door of the room and make intentions and interpret their intentions according to what they hear.

4- Spooning: ‌ The girl and the boy put on a chador to be unknown, ‌Then they go to the house of friends, relatives and neighbors and hit the bowl they are holding with a spoon. The landlord hears the sound and brings them nuts, snacks and chocolates and gives them. The ancients believed that this was done for the souls of the dead and as a charity.
