Maharloo Lake

Published Date: Jan 30 2021 2:14PM

In addition to historical attractions, Shiraz also has natural attractions. The most important of them is Maharloo Salt Lake in the southeast of Shiraz on Fasa road. The lake is located in a village of the same name.

This seasonal lake becomes almost dry and salt marsh in summer and is refilled with seasonal rivers and rain in autumn and winter which is the best time for visiting.

The reason this lake is famous is its pink (red) water. The evaporation rate of this lake is very high, so it is very salty, and this causes a type of algae called Dunaliella salina or red tide to multiply in it and turn the water pink. No fish or other living creatures grow in this lake except Artima. But there are many migratory and non-migratory birds in it, the most important of which are Flamingos, Oysters, Ostriches, and so on.

A few years ago, the lake dried up completely, but returned to its previous state with rain. This lake is also a source of salt for Shiraz and also a cosmetic pigment.
